JSU International Programs

English Language Institute

ELI Students at the classroom

The English Language Institute will prepare you for successful university study. When you study English at ELI you become part of the university—your JSU student ID card gives you access to housing, dining, health services, sports and entertainment events.

At ELI, you will enjoy a college experience before you start college!

What I will study?

In classes of 12 or fewer students, our experienced professors will enable you to use American English confidently so you can be successful at the university.

Every week you will study for 21 – 25 hours:

  • 16 hours of reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, public speaking, and pronunciation
  • 3 hours of "Introduction to JSU", where you will learn about studying at an American university by visiting actual classes, meeting international students, and going to university events
  • 2 hours of a simulated undergraduate class, where you can experience a “real” college class
  • 4 hours of optional courses such as "TOEFL/IELTS Preparation" and "Cinema & Cultural Analysis"
  • In addition, you will be matched with a “Conversation Partner", a JSU student who you will practice English with

English Requirements

There are six levels in the program, but most students will start at Level 2 or 3. You can take a free placement test here to see if you are ready for ELI.

Students are usually ready to be admitted to the university after they finish Level 4 or 5. With “Conditional Admission”, no TOEFL or IELTS score is required to enter the undergraduate program.
